Ruby Freyer - 2025

My current work focuses on the theme of "routine" with a specific emphasis on subjects related to domestic spaces. I focus on routine because routine is crucial to my identity and the way I live my life. I paint bathrooms and kitchens because I find that these domestic spaces are most aligned with the routines in my life. The motif of grids in my pieces represent the order that routine provides to my life. Despite wanting my art to clearly reflect myself and my passions, I also aspire to make art that people are able to look at and find familiarity in. Painting common interior rooms give my pieces my desired sense of familiarity, but the unique importance they have to me and my routine keep my pieces as clear reflections of self.

For me, making art is a crucial aspect of my self-expression, and an important way I keep myself grounded in the face of outward chaos in my life. Almost every choice I make in the process of my work is based on what I know will make me feel "happy." I hate feeling stressed when making art, so I intentionally turn towards materials and processes that are familiar, and that I know will not stress me out. I can not help but smile everytime I am surrounded by bright colors, so I try to incorporate bright colors into my art pieces. I find the repetitive motion of a paintbrush with paint soothing, so I choose acrylic paint as my primary medium. I still try to challenge myself when making my art, but I choose to do so in a way that I am still able to enjoy. I want to be able to truly love the process and the final piece, and this desire drives all the decisions I make when it comes to my art.
